ARPEGGIO / BROKEN CHORD
ARPEGGIO: Derived from an Italian word Arpeggiare which means 'to play like a harp' Hence, all the notes in an Arpeggio or a Broken Chord are played one after another in the same way as playing harp, but not simultaneously as strumming chords.
Three types of arpeggios each for 3/4 and 4/4 meters are given below. Play them slowly in the beginning and increase the tempo only when the right-hand fingers are completely set on each of the strings as indicated.
ARPEGGIO in 3/4 METER
Play the following arpeggio on any chord you have learnt so far.
ARPEGGIO in 4/4 Meter
Play the following arpeggio on any chord you have learnt so
far.
[Try the same arpeggios on different chord shapes to develop your right-hand
fingers]
Classical, Folk and Flamenco guitarists use finger-picking technique. Classically trained Jazz guitarists also use this technique. Finger-picking technique is an advantage for playing chord-melody.
[REMEMBER: All Arpeggios are broken chords, but not all broken chords are arpeggios. To understand this, you have to understand the Inversion of chords.]
